Getting IEC is easy as breeze but before that you must have a TIN number and PAN number! Go to your DGFT office and meet the PRO there. In general they are very helpful people. Fee is only Rs.250/- and there is no scope for bribes. do not pay a single paisa to anyone. Avoid middlemen. GET CST and VAT registration get IEC and breathe easy.
To all those who want to apply for IEC, no need to pay agents any money. I applied it myself online and got in 4 days by just paying a fee of RS 250.
Now what all you have to do.
Vist DGFT website and apply online. There is a help link, use that all the instructions are there, Follow these procedures and apply.
Now the only part is that size of the documents scanned. Stuff like banker's certifcate, NOC etc have to be in a particular size, now of any of you finding a problem in size of a PDF as it is large so here is a solution. To decrease the size of the PDF you need to re make the safe PDF again with the help of this free software called as PDF creator. This will do all you need.

I have an IEC but I am not using it since courier companies do not ask for documentation on small shipments like 2 bags, 1 skirt etc. But what I need to ask is: Is this retail selling internationally considered exports as per IEC norms. hi akshey, great work, you must be helping lots of people like me who need help in applying for IEC, first tell me have you got your IEC? I have a company which is 2 years old (proprietorship) and is registered with the sales tax dept. since april 04 but unfortunately i had not done any business in that company, and hence have not filed ITRs, sales tax returns have been filed for 0.00 business, this is the case, now i want to apply for IEC in this companys name, i have few doubts in my mind :
1. Is it necessary for a company to be 03 years old (they have asked for past 03 years ITRs) ? 2. Is it necessary to be a functioning company ? 3. Can a new co. apply for a IEC? 4. What is the application fees? 5. What is the total expenditure? 6. Can you send me a check list of documents to be attached?

Getting IEC code or import export liscence is good when you are exporting or importing somthing in bulk.I had also heard about ECGC,Export credit guarantee corporation, i think they can also give us good advice on import and related to import duties. In electronic item such as ipod you have to pay 30% import duty. This depends on of how much invoice is of. But the custom department brings uniformity in price irrespective of how much amount of invoice had been made. Better to contact importers to get goods in lower cost i think.

The only thing I want to add is that for a person with running business (with Current A/c , PAN etc) won't even have to visit the Chartered Accountant as filing the form will be very easy for such situation. Well, i will, i think pay a visit to the customs office and STPI for the exact info and will post it for you. However, you have a legal right to question the custom officials (in a decent manner) the reason(s) for such unfortunate situations and other possibilities. This is my best answer at the moment.
You are right about the freight forwarders. UPS, DHL, FedEx are THE best guys to rely on. If your seller is giving you these options then you are safer than those other local agencies. My guess is that, as the TV spot goes (DHL Tagline - We know Asia bla bla...), they would have their links (HUsssshhh). LOL.
