Hi friends, Yesterday I walked into a small shop near calcutta corporation to buy stamp stationeries. Instead the gentleman gave me a list of his publications and said he is about to close shop. So ,casually, I asked him to be introducedced. He handed me a visiting card and said 'I am Manik Jain'. I jumped. This man is the sole authority in Indian stamps and is world famous for his studies. Thanx, Truly, Amitava
Dear 09nov68, Thanx. His Indian philateley knowlege re: both stamps and stationery is vast. Cooper is best for post-stamp cancellations and Guiles is best for prestamp cancellations. You get matrial to study Cooper but to study Guiles, one has to have lakhs of Rupees. Mr Jain gives me some concessions but that is not enough to cover FVF+PP(10%) of ebay. I had an idea to sell his autographed books, but had to opt out because I will be a looser. I like him very much as a gentleman. Philatelic community is diminishing day by day here in Kolkata. God knows what days are coming. Thanx again, Truly, Amitava
Manik Jain publishes philatelic & numismatic literatures. Earlier he used to sell post independance stamps by mail.I have purchased many of my post independance collections from him almost 25 years ago. Later he sold all his stocks and now is fulltime into publications. Next time anybody buys some books from him dont forget to get his autograph on the inside blank sheet of the book.
Hi Rony, Thanx. I am studying his books for last about 2 years. What I learned in these days, I could not learn in last forty years. I suggest all philatelists to read Manik Jain. Probably there is no alternative. The best part is that. his publications are very much affordable. That small airconditioned shop is a treasure house. Thanx again, Truly, Amitava
Manik Jain is the Numero Uno in Indian Philately. His guide books are printed since 1964 and are regarded as holy scriptures and chanted as morning prayers in the Indian Philatelic circle.
I might sound kinda dumb...and to be honest...I do not have any specific interest in stamps either...but Who is Manik Jain and what is his claim to fame?
Hi Swarup, Lets go together. That small air conditioned office and the lonely lean tall person. It gives you a serene feeling. For me it was a run out. I was stunned. Thanx, Truly, Amitava
